December Umrah Packages from the UK: 5 Proven Ways

December Umrah Packages from the UK and How to Prepare

December Umrah Packages from the UK and How to Prepare Spiritually Before You Travel

A few years ago my brother-in-law took his whole family for Umrah over the Christmas break. The children were off school, he had leave from work, and the weather in Makkah was kind. He still says it was the best two weeks the family has ever spent together. But he also admits he paid more than he needed to, simply because he booked late and did not prepare the children properly for what they would see and do.

December is one of the most popular months for British Muslims to travel for Umrah, and with good reason. This guide covers what December Umrah packages from the UK cost, what an all-inclusive package should include, the visa timeline, and how to prepare your heart and your recitation before you go.

December is a good month for Umrah from the UK because the weather in Makkah and Madinah is mild and the school holidays make family travel easier. All-inclusive packages in early December usually cost around £750–£1,000 per person, rising to roughly £1,100–£1,600 over Christmas and New Year. Book now if you have not already, because December 2026 is only weeks away.

Why December Works Well for UK Families

The weather is at its gentlest. In summer, daytime temperatures in Makkah can pass 40°C. In December they are usually around 29–30°C, with cooler evenings. Madinah is milder still, and nights can drop to about 12°C, so pack a light jumper. For older parents and young children, this makes Tawaf and Sa'i far more manageable.

The school holidays line up. Most schools in England and Wales break up around 18–19 December and return in early January. That gives families a two-week window without taking children out of school.

It falls in a blessed month. In 2026, Rajab, one of the four sacred months, is expected to begin around 10 or 11 December. Many pilgrims feel there is something special about travelling during a sacred month, and the Haram has a calm, steady atmosphere before the build-up to Ramadan.

It is quieter than Ramadan. The Haram is busy, especially over the Christmas fortnight, but nothing like the crowds of the last ten nights of Ramadan. You can usually find space for Tawaf at night and a quiet corner to read Quran after Fajr.

What to pack for a December trip

People often pack as if they are going somewhere hot all day and get caught out at night. A few things I always suggest:

  • A light jumper or shawl for Madinah evenings and air-conditioned hotels
  • Comfortable, broken-in sandals for long walks on marble floors
  • A spare set of ihram for men, as December travel days are long
  • A small bag for your Quran, prayer mat and water bottle
  • Lip balm and moisturiser, because the air is very dry
  • Copies of your visa, hotel booking and vaccination certificate, both printed and on your phone

December Umrah Package Prices and What All-Inclusive Should Mean

December is really two seasons in one. The first half is quiet and fairly priced. From around 18 December, when the schools break up, flight prices from the UK rise sharply and stay high until early January.

Travel datesRough all-inclusive price per person (7–10 nights, sharing)
1–17 December£750–£1,000
18 December–3 January£1,100–£1,600

These are guide prices only. The hotel's distance from the Haram, the airline and the number of people sharing a room all change the final figure.

Whatever the dates, an all-inclusive package from the UK should cover:

  • Return flights from a UK airport, with baggage allowance stated
  • The visa, or full help with the application
  • Named hotels in Makkah and Madinah, with the walking distance to the Haram in metres
  • All transfers, including the journey between Makkah and Madinah
  • At least breakfast every day
  • Guided Ziyarat in Makkah and Madinah
  • A UK office and a contact on the ground in Saudi Arabia

When I help friends compare quotes, I use a UK specialist that sets all of this out openly as a benchmark. The Umrah packages all-inclusive from UK pilgrims can compare at Islamic Travel show the hotel, its distance from the Haram and what is included, and they are ATOL-protected. If another December offer cannot tell you this much, ask why before you pay anything.

Visa and Booking Timeline for December 2026

With December only a few weeks away, timing matters. This is the order I would follow now.

  1. This week, choose your dates and book. Christmas fortnight packages are the first to sell out, and flight prices only go up from here.
  2. Check every passport. Each one needs at least six months' validity from your travel date.
  3. Sort the visa.
    • British passport holders can apply online for the Saudi tourist eVisa, which allows Umrah outside the Hajj period. It costs about £100–£120 with insurance and often comes through within a few days.
    • UK residents on other passports need an Umrah visa lodged by a licensed agent through Saudi Arabia's Nusuk system. Allow two to three weeks, so for a mid-December trip this needs to start in early November.
  4. Get the meningitis ACWY jab. It must be given at least ten days before you arrive. Most UK pharmacies offer it for around £30–£50.
  5. Book your Nusuk Umrah permit for a set date and time once your visa is issued. It is free.
  6. Pay by credit card, which gives Section 75 protection on purchases between £100 and £30,000, and check the agent's ATOL number on the Civil Aviation Authority website.

Preparing Spiritually Before You Travel

The package takes care of the hotel and the flights. The preparation of the heart is yours. Over the years I have noticed that the families who get the most from Umrah are the ones who start preparing a few weeks before they fly, not on the plane.

Learn the Talbiyah properly. You will recite it again and again from the moment you enter ihram. Practise the words with correct pronunciation so that it flows naturally. If your Tajweed is rusty, a few short lessons with a teacher make a real difference.

Brush up on the surahs you will recite. Many pilgrims recite short surahs in their two rak'ahs after Tawaf. Choose the ones you know well, and spend a little time each day reciting them clearly and slowly.

Learn a handful of duas by heart. You do not need a book full. The dua between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone, the duas on Safa and Marwah, and your own personal duas, written down in advance, are enough.

Set a Quran goal for the trip. Some people aim to finish a juz a day in the Haram. Others simply want to read with understanding. Decide before you go, and bring a small copy with a translation you like.

Prepare the children. My brother-in-law's biggest regret was not explaining things to his children beforehand. Tell them the story of Hajar and Isma'il before they walk between Safa and Marwah, and teach them a short dua of their own. Children who understand what they are doing remember it for the rest of their lives.

The mild December weather is a gift here. With fewer crowds than Ramadan and comfortable mornings, there is real time to sit in the Haram after Fajr and read.
